Ian Holowko, Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions Award 2017

On the 11 February 2018 at Government House, Ian Holowko of Templestowe, received a Premier's Volunteer Champions Award for his exceptional leadership in developing accommodation and programs that benefit young people with an intellectual disability in the City of Manningham. The award is a fitting acknowledgement of Ian's contribution and dedication to increase inclusion and positive outcomes for people with a disability.

A founding and current member of the executive committee of Manningham Inclusive Community Housing (MICH), his advocacy and negotiation skills were
instrumental in bringing together corporate, community, and government entities for MICH's first inclusive community housing project in Doncaster.

Ian stated that "in providing opportunities to live within mainstream settings, young people with a disability retain connection with their existing work and social communities. By gaining a level of independence, people with a disability will become more productive and gain the satisfaction of contributing to their local community, improving their overall quality of life and wellbeing. Families no longer able to care for their adult children with a disability will also be relieved of the stresses and pressures they have experienced for a lifetime, improving their overall quality of life and wellbeing".

Ian noted that "the issue of accommodation was very resolvable. With the help of project partners, we have made a great start.  We just need others to get on board to put the matter to bed".
